Description

A Unesco Art Book
The unique and fascinating artistic heritage of the Himalayan regions is still virtually unknown to the general reader. The northern mountain regions of the Indian subcontinent abound in treasures of religious and mythological art of astounding beauty. The wall paintings and sculptures of the temples and monasteries, many of them thousands of years old, represent a commentary on the changing forms and influences in Indian art, here distilled, refined and preserved in the isolation of the mountain valleys and plateaus. Until now, no general account of Himalayan art covering the whole region from Ladakh in the west to Bhutan in the east has been published, mainly because the wall paintings and sculptures are situated in remote religious communities, often inaccessible for religious, and lately political, reasons. Madanjeet Singh has been able to travel to even the most remote sites to study and to photograph works of art whose reproduction has hitherto been forbidden.

Himalayan Art, Madanjeet Singh, Unesco, Hardcover, 295 pages, $40.00
