Description About the author

[...] It is very important that people actually understand and practice the three yanas (or vehicles). When people who have not practiced dharma in great depth first examine the structure of the three yanas, they appear to be individual or separate from one another. For example, when we are beginning practitioners we often look at what is called the hinayana (lesser vehicle), and say, "Well, it is called the lesser vehicle or hinayana; therefore, it must be something inferior or lower". And because mahayana is called greater vehicle, it appears distinct and superior or preferable the hinayana or lesser vehicle. Then the vajra vehicle seems to be distinctive as well - something incredibly good and far beyond the previous two vehicles. [...]

The significance of the teachings being presented in terms of three vehicles is not a result of the nature of the vehicles themselves, but rather because they are intended to relate to the different capacities or propensities of individuals who will practice them. Individuals have either lesser, avarage, or superior faculties; therefore, different teachings are appropriate for them. [...] excerpt from page 1.
