In Tibetan religious literature, Jamgon Kongtrul's Treasury of Knowledge in ten volumes stands out as a unique encyclopedic masterpiece embodying the entire range of Buddhist teachings as they were preserved in Tibet.

In this volume, Journey and Goal, the focus is on the spiritual path "the journey", and the resultant state of enlightenment where it leads � �the goal.� Extensively varied perspectives are offered, not only from within the many schools of Buddhism, but also from the different levels of practice and attainment. This is in fact the most comprehensive treatment of these themes to appear in the English language.

Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Taye (1813-1900), the author of The Treasury of Knowledge, helped to spearhead an ecumenical revival of the Buddhist teachings in Tibet and worked tirelessly to promote a tolerant and open exchange between the different schools of the Tibetan tradition. In addition to writing The Treasury of Knowledge, he was responsible for compiling several enormous collections of texts from all the Buddhist lineages extant in Tibet. In the wake of the destruction of Tibet in more recent times, these collections have proved invaluable in helping to preserve the lineages of these teachings.
