Modern Bonpo masters recognize three kinds of Bon : 1. "ancient Bon" (bon rnying) which was spread in Tibet and Zhangzhung prior to the advent of Tonpa Shenrab;
2. "Eternal Bon" (g.yung drung bon) which corresponds to the teachings of Buddha Tonpa Shenrab; and
3. "New Bon" (Bon gsar) which represents a particular current of Bon teachings said to go back to the 8th century but actually "revealed" in the 14th century and throughout Bon history down to the present day.
Eternal Bon and New Bon share many common lineage holders, despite the heavy influence of other Buddhist sects on New Bon (in particular Nyingmas and Kagyus).
