(1092-1158) Son of Konchok Gyalpo ('khon dkon mchog rgyal po), the founder of the Sakya school. A great scholar who developed the Sakya tradition. The first of the Five Early Patriachs of the Sakyas.
At the time of his ather's death he was only eleven years old. For a while the translator Bari became the regent, and from 1111 he managed the monastery, remaining abbot for nearly fifty years. He taught in the tradition of the Nyingma schoolwhich had been transmitted by the Khon, and the Hevajra tantra, transmitted by Konchok Gyalpo from Drokmi (brog mi). He further acomplished  tantric Buddhism of the Sakya tradition, which had been augmented with Indian tantras transmitted by the translator Bari. He was called Sachen, "Great Master of the Sakya." He refused to take monk ordination and remained a lay practioner.
