Silent Holy Stone, China's first movie in the Tibetan language, was written and directed by a Tibetan. The 102-minute movie tells the story of a young lama who returns to home for New Year holidays from his remote temple, and is deeply impressed by the changes in his village. It reflected the balance of tradition and modernity, religious devotion and simple relations among people by depicting the silent changes taking place in remote areas of Tibet.

The Silent Holy Stones is the feature debut of Pema Tsedon, a Tibetan graduate of the Beijing Film Academy. It won Best Director at the Shanghai International film Festival, the Grand Jury Prize and the Changchun Film Festival, and the Golden Rooster Award for Best Directorial Debut in China. Filmed on location in and around Guwa Monastery, Amdo.

Pema Tseden (The Search, Old Dog) is the first Tibetan graduate of the Beijing Film Academy, and this is his dramatic feature debut. The film follows a young lama assigned for Tibetan New Year to attend to the seven-year-old Living Buddha (tulku) of a mountain monastery. The young lamas try to balance their strict training with the explorations of the outside world through the novelty of television, and make some surprising choices. Like all great neo-realist films, The Silent Holy Stones has the immediacy of a documentary, and the Tseden delivers a compelling and intimate insider's view of everyday life in his home town.
