First published in 1973

This publication presents three of the earliest recorded discourses offered by the Buddha. These 72 original verses of the Buddha unveil some of the most essential and quintessential teachings in Buddhism. The first discourse Rajadesananama-Mahayana Sutra I deals with the sources of sufferings of samsara; the second discourse Rajadesananama-Mahayana Sutra II discusses the method of subdueing oneself; and the third discourse Silasamyukta Sutra shows the essence of moral conduct. By retaining a storytelling framework, the discourses avoid abstraction but instead illustrate practical influences upon individuals who are searching for peace of mind and the ultimate truth. The cover of the book is designed to convey the symbolic message of impermanence which is also the concluding stanza of the book:

"Enjoyable things are compared to waterfall
While life in a house is like drifting in a boat
As a flower, so indeed this human body
And as a bubble, so is this human life."

Three Discourses of the Buddha; Thubten Kalzang Rinpoche, Bhikkhu Nagasena, and Bikkhu Khantipale (translators); Library of Tibetan Works and Archives; Paperback; 22 pp; $5.00
