The term tantra is normally applied for the rites practiced in performance of rituals of the religious faiths of India and the neighboring countries. It appears to be some short of a psycho-therapy adopted by the primeval human society for warding off evil spirits and hazards of physical ailments. Much before the evolution of basic concept of God and religion, existence of good and bad spirits was presumed, which gave rise to mystical theology known as tantra. However it is quite complicated and it is rather difficult to discern differences between tantric from non-tantric rituals. Certain religious rites performed by the folks of Uttarakhand region, gives some faint idea about practices of Indian tantra and its relation with the Pon faith of neighboring region of Western Tibet known as Shang Shung. The subject matter of this book is not the methodology and concept of art (or science) of tantra. It is simply a basic study of comparative relationship between pre Vedic Indian tantra and Pon tantra of ancient land of Shang Shung (Western Tibet). Explorers, who ventured into the forbidden land of Tibet and Central Asia at the risk of their lives, are of the opinion that the tantric practices originated in the land of Shang Shung addressed a Ponism or Bonism faith. Many of them have even suggested that this cult practice, spread in outside world, including India from there. However from certain cult practices and folk cultural traditions of Himalayan regions and Vedic references, one gets the impression of origin of Pon cult of tantra, in India which was practiced by Indian ascetics in the region of Kailas, the domain of Lord Shiva which was addressed as Shang Shung then. Scholars have even concluded that certain tantric rites have been assimilated into Hindu rituals as practiced today. Ancient Tibetan and Chinese texts and traditions also give strong indication of Indian elements in Pon cult of Tibet. The very words pon and shang-shung appear to be derivatives of Sanskrit words. This book is a humble attempt to attract the attention of the scholars of the subject towards the mystery of origin of ancient Pon cult of Shang Shung (Western Tibet) with greater analysis of Indian elements in it.
